Sergio The Saviour

Sergio Agüero scored again. There is nothing remarkable in that as Manchester City defeated Sheffield Wednesday to earn a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, a cup they are determined to win again.

But what was remarkable is that Agüero now has 20 goals in just 22 FA Cup ties – and no one has scored more times in the competition since the 31-year-old striker arrived at City back in 2011. It is all the more impressive given City have only won the trophy once in that time, last year, but they are clear favorites to retain it.

Goals have been scarce and so, against such a free-scoring team as City, manager Garry Monk packed his defence with a back-five. Still chances were spurned. Agüero completely missed a low cross from Benjamin Mendy, when unmarked, Gabriel Jesus headed wide from a John Stones cross, Riyad Mahrez skied over the bar from the edge of the penalty area and Jesus failed to connect with an Agüero cross.

This tie mattered to City. Guardiola picked a strong team, just three days after winning the Carabao Cup, as this is another trophy he wants to retain.

The tempo had been raised and, at last, City had the breakthrough with Mendy playing a pass into Aguero’s feet with the striker shifting to his left and shooting low through the legs of Dominic Iorfa as he dived to block. Wildsmith got a hand to it only for the ball to spin up and bounce into the net. Maybe the goalkeeper should have done better.
